GENUINE DESIRE:
Matthew 14:25-32 NIV
[25] Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. [26] When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. [27] But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” [28] “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” [29] “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. [30] But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” [31] Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” [32] And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
When Peter realized that the man walking on the lake was not a ghost, his fears turned to genuine desire to emulate his Mastor. So, Peter prayed “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Christ answered, “come”, he believed it, stepped out of the boat and started walking on water like Jesus.
Do you also desire to walk on water? What is your motive for desiring to walk on water? Jesus walked on the lake because He saw His disciples struggling to row against the wind (Mark 6:47-48). Peter really wanted to learn from Christ. If you want to walk on water, your motives must be right.
Secondly, has the Lord given you the go ahead to walk on water? Then don’t look around and don’t allow the storms of life to cause you to fear and doubt your God. Keep your eyes on Jesus and keep moving with Him in obedience.
Friends, Christ’s desire is for us to do the things He does and more. The problem is, are our motives for desiring to do them right. Some desire to do the things of God for fame, money, greed, or for selfish aims. Jesus told His disciples…
John 14:12-14 NKJV
[12] “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. [13] And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Those who believe in Christ will do the same things that Christ did, including walking on water if they need to, and they will bring much glory to God for doing so.
