IT IS FINISHED:
John 19:1-4, 28-30 NKJV
[1] So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. [2] And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. [3] Then they said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck Him with their hands. [4] Pilate then went out again, and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him.”
[28] After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” [29] Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. [30] So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Jesus was crucified even though Pilate found Him innocent and worked hard to try and free Him. It was religious people, the people who were supposed to represent God, who conspired and insisted that Jesus should be crucified. God turned this for our good because only an innocent man, a lamb without blemish, could die to take away the sins of a guilty world.
When Pilate scourged Him with stripes, he didn’t know that the stripes he was inflicting on Jesus would purchase our healing (1 Peter 2:24). When the soldiers twisted a crown out of thorns and placed it on His head, they didn’t know that they were placing the chastisement of our peace on Him, so that you and I can have peace (Isaiah 53:5). God turned everything that was meant for evil against Jesus for His good. He has done the same for you and I through Christ Jesus, our Lord!
When Jesus knew that all scriptures concerning Himself had been accomplished, He asked for water. After being given sour wine instead of the water, He cried out, IT IS FINISHED, and gave up His spirit (He died). The price for your sin and mine was paid for. One who owed no debt paid for your debt and mine that we couldn’t pay, ONCE AND ALL! Hallelujah! We are free, totally free from sin and all its impact on our lives.
If you don’t know Him yet as your Saviour, turn to Him today, He will save you, too. He will set you free from your afflictions, guilty consciousness and your sins. Will you believe in Him today?
