GENERATIONAL AND FAMILY TRAITS:
Genesis 20:1-7 NLT
[1] Abraham moved south to the Negev and lived for a while between Kadesh and Shur, and then he moved on to Gerar. While living there as a foreigner, [2] Abraham introduced his wife, Sarah, by saying, “She is my sister.” So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to him at his palace. [3] But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married!” [4] But Abimelech had not slept with her yet, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? [5] Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘Yes, he is my brother.’ I acted in complete innocence! My hands are clean.” [6] In the dream God responded, “Yes, I know you are innocent. That’s why I kept you from sinning against me, and why I did not let you touch her. [7] Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet. Then you will live. But if you don’t return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die.”
Abraham lied to king Abimelech that Sarah was his sister in an attempt to save his life. As a result Abimelech took Sarah into his palace as one of his wives, but God intervened and saved the day. Several years later, Isaac repeated the same mistake with his wife Rebekah.
Genesis 26:7-9 NLT
[7] When the men who lived there asked Isaac about his wife, Rebekah, he said, “She is my sister.” He was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “They will kill me to get her, because she is so beautiful.” [8] But some time later, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out his window and saw Isaac caressing Rebekah. [9] Immediately, Abimelech called for Isaac and exclaimed, “She is obviously your wife! Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” “Because I was afraid someone would kill me to get her from me,” Isaac replied.
Family traits are transferable. So are Sicknesses, habits, and many other traits. If you look into your background and find drunkenness, miscarriages, crime, poverty, difficulties in marriage, divorce, and all sorts of other limiting factors like number of childbirth, break them down. Jesus Christ came for this very reason. You and I have the power to break these yokes in Jesus’s name. Amen!
If you are still not convinced, let me give you another example. Jacob was named a supplanter and he became a conman and a trickster (Genesis 25:29-34). Who trained him to become a trickster? His mum (Genesis 27:1-40)! Who tricked him out of his wages for several years? His Uncle Laban (Genesis 31:6-7, 38-4), his mothers brother! Looks to me this thing runs in the family. Jacob was born a trickster and even though he was blessed, he found this trait operating in his life. Thank God he was desperate and wise enough to fight an angel who blessed him with a change of name.
Do you want to be free and break that chain so that the generations after you can be totally free? Take your stand on the word of God and exercise your authority in the name of Jesus. Cancel that generational trait or curse in the name of Jesus and break free from that yoke. If you are desperate for freedom, Christ will set you free! You are more than a conqueror.
